Flower was instrumental in organising the Flag Raising Ceremony at Drummuie, Golspie, which marks the start of Armed Forces Week. Those who were not able to attend  Drummuie were presented with their badges at home – quite an undertaking. This year, Flower had the pleasure of presenting a veteran’s badge to her husband, George, who has always been very supportive.

It was Flower’s idea to provide a lunch for all the  veterans and their guests after the ceremony, and she was very active in fundraising for the event. Flower has formed a small fundraising group -”Friends of The Veterans ” to continue her involvement with the veterans.

Wreath Laying at Clyne War Memorial 1st January 2013

As the chimes of the Clyne War Memorial rang out at 4 pm on the first day of 2013 piper Colin Simpson played an air – a call for the assembled company to remember those who had fallen in the wars but more particularly on this occasion, for people of Brora village and parish to reflect on the ceremony of Christmas Day 1922 when the handsome baronial tower, a memorial to the Fallen of the Great War was unveiled by Mrs Matheson from Dalchalm.

Dr Rod Houston, representing ‘The Friends of the Clyne War Memorial’ invited the crowd of some 120 to move forward as he gave a brief history of the memorial and its clock.  He then called on The Lord Lieutenant, Dr Monica Main, to address those present. She recalled the 11th November Service held each Armistice Sunday when the community remembers the fallen of all conflicts. It was appropriate that she made mention of the impact the loss of young men’s lives had had, not only on the community in general but on the families left behind in particular.

On the afternoon of New Year’s Day those gathered together paid silent tribute, remembering former generations. None of us should forget the human aspect of war.

Standing beside the Lord Lieutenant was Cadet  James Allan who handed the wreath of white roses and blue thistles to a man who had lost 3 uncles and an aunt in the  Great War of 1914-1918 –“ the war to end wars” as it was referred to at the time.

And it was only correct that Thomas Matheson should lay this wreath on behalf of the people of Clyne. ‘To have stood on the very spot his Grandmother had stood on 90 years earlier was a very emotional experience” for him; as indeed it was for all gathered.

To bring the proceedings to a close, Colin played the lament “The Flowers of the Forest” its haunting tones reverberating through the crisp late afternoon air as he walked away from the memorial. For a short time we had all paused, not only to reflect on the past losses but also to look forward, as a community to the year ahead.
